Even when its roots are in the murkiest waters, the lotus emerges as one of Earth’s most beautiful flowers. Growth is nonlinear, and so is our path to transformation. â£

There are many wounds to heal, and I’ve done much writing to heal them, one page at a time. Though there is still much work to be done, I’ve discovered a rich and textured life I hadn’t before recognized in this process. Writing helps us navigate our wounds, honor our feelings, transforming them into a language that creates space for healing. â£

One of the things I’ve learned is that one cannot truly heal through ‘casually’ writing unless we use it to confront our pain. â£

So today, we begin our healing journey by exploring the murky waters of our past, diving deep into how it all began. Every feeling you’ve ever felt creates the alchemy of your chemistry. Your chemistry exists today because of an event that happened in your past. Since we are an accumulation of the stories we tell ourselves— writing takes us back to confront our wounds. If we can reconnect with our history, then we have the power to ‘rewrite’ our past (perspective.) Only when we can heal ourselves, then we can heal the world. â£
What we are looking for is what is looking. â£

Write about a painful childhood memory in great depth, recalling the thoughts and emotions you felt. â£
As you write, you may connect it with parts of your life. How does this event affect your relationship with yourself and others? How does this event relate to who you might have been in the past, who you are now, and who you’d like to be in the future?â£
â£
As always, don’t worry about correctness, grammar or punctuation. Try to write in an extremely detailed account, creating an emotionally compelling narrative. Never use your writing to become self-absorbed, or to use writing about our past as a way of “complaining.” Instead, use it to discover how, and why you feel as you do now. â£
